A seed sorting machine should be selected from the lot, not from the product name. “Vegetable seed,” “herb seed,” “bean seed” and “coated seed” describe broad categories, but they do not tell a supplier what must be removed, how fragile the material is or how the finished lot will be released. This guide gives European buyers a practical way to compare equipment and suppliers.
Use this sequence: define the crop and lot standard, prepare difficult samples, identify the visible decision, choose the feed and camera structure, test accepted recovery and reject purity, then confirm the machine’s utilities, layout and service plan.1. Start with the seed’s physical behaviour
Record particle size, shape, weight, coating, moisture, surface reflection and flowability. Tiny round seeds may move differently from flat seeds or irregular legumes. Coated seed may have a different surface appearance from raw seed. Fragile material may require a gentler transfer path and a lower-impact feeding arrangement.
2. Separate quality targets from laboratory targets
An optical sorter can evaluate visible color, shape, size, texture and surface damage. It cannot, by optical appearance alone, guarantee germination, varietal identity, internal embryo health or chemical-treatment compliance. A professional proposal should state which questions the machine answers and which remain with laboratory sampling and certification.
3. Compare the equipment route
Processing condition Route to discuss with WESORT Important test Small free-flowing seed with clear color contrast Precision chute color sorting. Fine defect visibility, feed stability and reject purity. Seed with surface defects on different sides AI multi-view or four-view inspection. Exterior coverage and borderline classification. Fragile or easily damaged material Low-impact feeding and controlled discharge. Breakage and abrasion before/after sorting. Mixed seed and foreign material Optical sorting integrated after suitable pre-cleaning. Seed recovery, foreign-material concentration and recheck. WESORT’s AI multi-view sorting platform is one example of a four-camera approach for complex particle surfaces; seed projects must be tested independently. The WESORT products center provides the wider equipment context.
4. Ask for a sample test that resembles production
A test is meaningful only when it contains the difficult material that causes production disputes. Send a normal batch, confirmed rejects and borderline samples. If your lot changes by variety or season, include those variations. Ask the supplier to record the actual feed condition and to retain samples from each output.
Require these results:- Accepted-seed recovery.
- Reject purity by defect category.
- Good-seed carry-over into reject.
- Borderline-seed decisions under your written grade rule.
- Breakage, abrasion or coating damage.
- Effect of dust, moisture and changing feed density.
- Recommended channel count, air pressure, power and footprint.
5. Do not confuse a catalogue number with usable capacity
Seed capacity changes with particle size, feed spacing, defect concentration, purity target and the number of passes. A plant that needs a very clean reject stream may run differently from one that only needs to remove obvious off-color material. Ask for the test throughput and the conditions under which it was achieved.
6. Plan the line around traceable decisions
European seed processors often need clear separation between production, quality assurance and release decisions. Design sampling points before and after the sorter. Save approved reference images, label the output streams and create an operator routine for checking changes in variety, lot and surface condition. The sorter should make the quality rule easier to repeat, not hide it inside an unrecorded setting.
7. What should be in the supplier’s proposal?
Proposal section What the buyer should see Material diagnosis Crop, size, coating, moisture, defect groups and feed behaviour. Machine configuration Viewing method, channel count, feeding path, utilities and footprint. Output plan Accepted lot, reject groups, recovery stream and optional second pass. Test evidence Samples, output photos, recovery, reject purity, carry-over and breakage. Support plan Commissioning, training, remote assistance, recipe updates and response process. 8. How WESORT supports the project
WESORT can start with a sample test, develop a sorting program, recommend a suitable platform and discuss how the equipment connects to the existing seed line. The team can also help operators understand accepted and reject references, recipe changes and routine output checks. This is especially important when a plant handles several seed types instead of one stable crop.
Customers can review WESORT customer applications and then request a test with their own European seed lot. The application examples provide context, while the customer’s material determines the final machine recommendation.
A high-quality seed sorting project has two deliverables: a machine configuration and a clear decision rule. If the supplier only quotes capacity and does not show how difficult samples will be treated, the buyer does not yet have enough information to approve the investment.
